Does dairy product contain fat?
Dairy product contains more saturated fat than unsaturated fat. Apart from dairy products, saturated fat can also be found in meat and peanuts. Unfortunately, saturated fat is regarded as ‘bad cholesterol’ because it contributes to heart diseases. On the other hand, unsaturated fat found in high quality vegetable oil, avocado, olives and fish is regarded as the opposite ‘good cholesterol’, good for skin and arteries and does not contribute to heart diseases. The body needs unsaturated fat to effectively digest saturated fat. This is why dairy product receives such negative notion, it gives saturated fat.

Will you get fat from consuming a lot of dairy products?

Over consumption of dairy products can put some more pounds on the scale, especially if cheese, ice cream and milk (all providing saturated fat) are your favorites. But do you know that milk calcium can inhibit fat absorption into cells or in other words, it prevents you from gaining excess fat. This is on the condition that you get more than a hundred milligrams of calcium a day.

Dairy products have these 2 main components we need, protein and calcium. More importantly, we get complete protein from dairy products. Note that there are 2 types of protein, complete and incomplete. Milk products contain adequate essential amino acids thus they are regarded as sources of complete protein. On top of that, milk fat is a source of vitamin D which is essential to the absorption of calcium in the body. Thus, if you want to get calcium from milk, drink whole milk.

Is it unhealthy to avoid dairy product?
You can still be healthy even though milk or dairy product is not included in your diet. Some people are even allergic to milk and react badly to it in the ways that they have trouble breathing, problems with the sinus, asthma or other skin problems like dermatitis. If you are one of them, it is best that you avoid dairy products.

For whom is high intake of dairy product good?
Women during pregnancy need approximately 1200 milligrams of calcium per day and about 100 milligrams more during lactation. Menopausal women need calcium for healthy bones. Female sex hormones ease the calcium absorption in the body so in absence of which, women should increase calcium intake and do weight-bearing exercise such as running and tai chi.

Natural yogurt is also a good option because in addition to calcium, it provides good microorganisms as well as ricotta cheese which is less processed and contains less fat.
