In the body, folic acid is converted to its biologically active form dihydrofolate (DHF) and tetrahydrofolate (THF) which serves as precursors to numerous metabolic pathways like in DNA & RNA synthesis, nucleic acid and amino acid synthesis and cell division. It is therefore particularly important during phases of rapid cell division such as infancy, pregnancy and formation of red blood cells. Folic acid contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
